WHAT IS BREAKAWAY ROPING?

“Breakaway Roping is a timed rodeo event where the roper catches a calve around the neck and the rope breaks away from the saddle when the rope is tight. It is a safe sport for both riders and livestock.

the nuts and bolts of how to:

Participants: One Horse, One Rider & One Calf

A calf is loaded into the chutes as a rider and horse back into the box. When the rider is ready, she will give the “Go Ahead” nod to the chute workers to release the calf. The rider’s goal is to rope the calf as quickly as possible while allowing the calf the head start (known as the barrier). The end of the rider’s rope has a flag onto it and is tied to the horn with a nylon string allowing the rope to easily break free while the calf continues to run. The time is stopped once the judge sees the flag is detached. The fastest run wins.”
